The Baltic States – Kontrol

I don’t know if I am just in a good mood this evening but this sounds bloody great. Electro and minimal vocal can sound a bit cold and soulless but this is exactly the opposite – fraught, vibrant and beautifully crafted. I just wish I’d listened to it back in May when it was actually released. 8/10

Pylo – View (Naim Edge)

Another beaut from Pylo to follow up from debut ‘Enemies’. Ostensibly a bit miserable sounding, after a longer listen it’s actually beguilingly warm hearted and euphoric. PR comparison with Sigur Ros are interesting but I actually think it sounds a bit more like, gulp, Coldplay on a good day. 8/10

The Good Natured – Lovers

A complete change of direction here from The Good Natured whose previous tracks ‘Be My Animal’ and ‘Prisoner’ were spiky, moody, aggressive things. ‘Lovers’ by comparison has a perky 80s pop vibe, even if the lyrics are still pretty domineering. Can’t quite work out the completely incongruent video though. 6/10

Be Like Pablo feat. Kuda – Without the Pain (Stray Cat)

Don’t get carried away with all the nerdpop soundbites and throwaway judgements on this one – beneath the outwardly fun-filled pop there is an ingenious level of complexity at work marrying the soporific rapping of Kuda with Weezerish power chords of Be Like Pablo. And it’s all such goodfun – listen to it and I defy you not to go back for seconds. 8/10

Satellites – Wasteland (Vesterbrother)

I thought I’d listened to this before and had positive things to say about it but on giving it another couple of spins, I’m just finding it duller and duller. Possibly a bit unfair judging it as a standalone piece when it is part of a concept album but the dull tones and uninspiring bass lines don’t inspire me to discover more. 5/10

Hearts Revolution – Kill Your Radio

This is the kind of attitude strewn, fizzling electro music that is made by people who I suspect are far cooler and far younger than I. It intrigues me but scares me in equal measure. I mean, they are from New York and they are signed to uber cool label Kitsune – I rest my case. Without leaving myself open to being criticised of not really ‘getting it’, I suspect Hearts Revolution are actually very good and you should give the Ep ‘Ride or Die a jolly good listen. 8/10

Juveniles – Fantasy

Oh sweet Jesus – as if Hearts Revolution didn’t make me feel as dorky as possible, along comes a pair of super chic French dudes (Jean-Sylvain Le Gouic and Thibaut Doray) who have put together this suave track and even managed to manufacture some good old lezzing in a video where they lounge around some stately chateau. If it wasn’t so bloody good in a summer funk stylee I’d definitely accuse them of taking le piss. 8/10
